Calm The Storm: Understanding The Biology Of Trauma

Gain a basic understanding of the biology of trauma and its impact on the brain, body, memory, sense of self, connections to others and the ability to feel fully alive.

Through lecture, small group discussion and experiential activities, you will have an opportunity to reflect on your own trauma imprint, consider the impact on communities you live and work with and learn practical tools to regain calm. Activities include trauma-sensitive accessible movement and somatic (body-based) techniques that partner with your body as an ally in building resiliency and calm during moments of distress. This interactive workshop will focus on restoring and reintegrating beloved community.

  • Identify when trauma responses arise
  • Understand how neurobiological processes impacted by trauma are related to survivors’ emotional and behavioral responses
  • Reduce stigma, shame and blame around trauma and associated responses
  • Develop tools and resources to restore calm when overwhelmed and/or triggered
  • Increase competency, compassion and empathy when facing challenging behavior, reactions and trauma response in self and others
  • Emphasize building interoception (the capacity to understand and feel what’s going on inside your body) as a tool for trauma recovery and self-regulation
  • Adopt a trauma-informed lens as a beloved community member and global citizen
  • Consider the impacts of trauma on marginalized community members

Sliding Scale Justice Pricing:

I stand for leveraging privilege to support others and offer the cost of attendance on a sliding scale. If you can afford to, please consider paying it forward by paying the $197 Supporter Rate. People who contribute at the top of the sliding scale support my ability to offer scholarship spaces at a cost below the bottom of the sliding scale to those who would otherwise be unable to participate. This allows me to scale the price so that everyone is included. I am committed to cultivating a diversity of voices and life experiences in this workshop & making this accessible to people of all income levels.
The reason the rates are so varied is because I value diversity (true diversity of all kinds) in the room. I want college professors, folk educated on the streets, folx with visible or invisible disabilities, queer folx, straight folk, people who identify across the race, income and gender spectrum… I’ve structured these workshops to be accessible and valued by anyone who desires to have access to this work.

How I value you as a participant in this community has NOTHING to do with what you pay. Your value is limitless; I’ve valued this workshop at $97 due to my time, training, livelihood, etc. There are multiple options for those with different levels of access to financial equity.

* For those with limited financial means who would be unable to attend at the sustainer rate, please choose the community rate. All others please pay at or above the sustainer rate.

Thank you.

One-day Workshop Fee

$197 | Supporter Rate (support others as well as yourself)
$97 | Sustainer Rate (pays for you)
*Anything between $25 and $97 | Sliding Scale Community Rate (low-income discount)
Sliding scales are sticky.  And here’s the thing, I trust you to make an assessment about what you have the capacity to pay. If I offer my work for free, people don’t value it and end up limited in my capacity to continue to offer my skills while meeting my own basic needs. This work is a deeply enriching investment in yourself as well as an investment in my livelihood backed by my years of education, training and real-world experience. I want this to be an edge, but not take food off your table or stop you from being able to afford your housing. My suggestion is to take a look at this budget calculator, and see where you have room. Truly.  Because I want you to have access to this, and I also have to keep a roof over my head, and food on my table.

If money is your only barrier for participation, please reach out to me (artemisia shine) to request a full or partial scholarship at love@artemisiashine.com

Scholarships:

We are committed to cultivating a diversity of voices and life experiences in our workshop and making them accessible to people of all income levels. A limited number of partial and/or full scholarships will be offered based on financial need with a focus on individuals from communities which have been historically marginalized and typically under-represented. We explicitly invite participation by people who come from any of the following communities. We know that when these people are included, all communities benefit:
  • People with visible or invisible disabilities
  • People who do not have white skin privilege and/or who come from communities who, though in the global majority, are under-represented in positions of institutional power because of racialized discrimination and its direct and indirect impacts.
  • People who are low-income/poor or working class
  • People who live and love outside the dominant norms of cis-gendered, binary, straight, monogamous relationships to sexuality and gender
  • People without U.S. citizenship status, who are directly affected by U.S. foreign and domestic policy, including the many indigenous people of these lands
  • Returning citizens; People returning to the community following incarceration in U.S. state and federal prisons, local jails, and juvenile facilities
  • People who currently work or volunteer significant time in the front lines of movements or organizations working for progressive social change, human rights, gender justice in the labor movement, housing justice, environmental & climate justice, youth organizing or community outreach
